In March 2017 within the framework of implementing the Russian-Japanese inter-sectorial Memorandum on Cooperation in Peaceful Uses of Nuclear Energy and in furtherance of the arrangements reached during the December 2016 working visit of Russian backend specialists to Fukushima Daiichi NPP, TENEX organized a visit of representatives from Tokyo Electric Power Company Holdings, Inc. (TEPCO) to several facilities under the umbrella of Rosatom State Corporation (Pilot and Demonstration Center for Decommissioning of Uranium-Graphite Reactors, Novovoronezh NPP) and National Research Center Kurchatov Institute to get familiarized with the available Russian competences in the field.

During the technical tour TEPCO specialists were familiarized with the technologies and solutions in handling radwaste, and also decommissioning nuclear and radiation hazardous facilities that could potentially be used to remediate the consequences of the accident at Fukushima Daiichi NPP.

The visit took place within the framework of the on-going Japanese program of studying the best world practices in the backend sphere aiming to minimize the expenses for decommissioning an emergency NPP and remediating the emergency consequences along with ensuring the required level of quality and safety.

 Background information:

Fukushima Daiichi Decontamination & Decommissioning Engineering Company was established by TEPCO in 2014 for the purpose of coordinating the works on decommissioning the emergency Fukushima Daiichi NPP and handling the on-site accumulated radwaste.
